Duplicati: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Duplicati is an open-source backup client that creates encrypted, incremental backups and stores them with the storage service of your choice. Destinations include Amazon S3, Azure, Backblaze B2, Google Cloud, SFTP, WebDAV and NAS. Data is encrypted on the client with AES-256 or GPG before upload. The client runs on Windows, macOS and Linux. For organisations the company offers paid features such as a web console for central management, backup policies for multiple machines, alerts and SSO, plus backups of Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace. The client is free and licensed under the MIT licence.

Duplicati Inc. is a US company, incorporated in Delaware in March 2024, that follows an open-core model: the client stays open source and enterprise features are paid. You decide where your backups are stored by choosing the storage destination. Choosing an EU provider or your own storage keeps backup data in Europe, and because data is encrypted before it is sent, the storage provider holds no readable content. The management console of the paid services is operated by a US company.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Duplicati

Duplicati is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Duplicati scores best on data residency.

Duplicati is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Duplicati together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
