Eclipse Dataspace Components (EDC) is an open-source framework for developers who build connectors and data-sharing services for data spaces. It combines the concept, architecture, code and samples that implementers can reuse and customise. The project is released under the Apache 2.0 licence and is listed as incubating on the Eclipse Foundation project page. It offers an open alternative to proprietary data-sharing platforms and closed connector products.
The Eclipse Foundation governs the project. It is a non-profit association under Belgian law (AISBL) with its headquarters in Brussels, and no single company controls the direction of the project. Because the code is licensed under Apache 2.0, a European organisation can deploy, audit and modify EDC on its own infrastructure. EDC is software, so where data is stored depends on the deployment each participant chooses.
