eduMEET: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

eduMEET is web conferencing software for multi-party meetings in the browser. It supports audio and video, screen sharing, chat and file sharing, and can authenticate users through OIDC, SAML or a local database. Local recording is available but disabled by default. The software was developed within the GÉANT project for research and education and is delivered as a Docker setup that organisations run on a server of their own.

The programme is hosted by The Commons Conservancy, a foundation under Dutch law. According to the repository, the GÉANT Association holds the copyright in material its project members developed. The licence is MIT and the source code is public. Organisations that host eduMEET themselves keep traffic and data on their own infrastructure, without the developers being involved. A grant from NLnet within the EU's NGI Zero programme funds work on federating several eduMEET installations for larger webinars. For a European organisation it is a self-managed alternative to hosted meeting services.

Why digital sovereignty matters with eduMEET

eduMEET is headquartered in NL and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so eduMEET scores best on data residency.

eduMEET is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs eduMEET together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
