EmailConnect: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

EmailConnect is an inbound email service for developers and automation builders. It receives email on your behalf, handles the mail server, spam filtering and parsing, and delivers the result to your webhook as structured JSON with sender, subject, text and HTML bodies, links and attachments. Plus-tag routing lets you route mail by address tag. Further features include spam scoring, DKIM, SPF and DMARC results, virus scanning, HMAC-signed webhooks, a REST API and integrations with n8n, Make and Zapier. It is delivered as a hosted SaaS service.

EmailConnect is run by a Dutch company registered with the Chamber of Commerce in Amsterdam, and no foreign parent company is stated. By default, email is received and processed in Germany at Hetzner; attachment storage and platform email use Scaleway in France. A data residency mode keeps message content out of EmailConnect's database, and processing in France, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain or Finland is available on request. A data processing agreement and sub-processor list are published. The service is not open source.

Why digital sovereignty matters with EmailConnect

EmailConnect is headquartered in NL and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so EmailConnect scores best on data residency.

EmailConnect is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs EmailConnect together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
