Mailjet: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Mailjet is an email platform for developers and marketers. It supports both marketing campaigns and transactional email, such as password resets and booking confirmations, through a RESTful API with SDKs, webhooks and a sandbox mode, or through an SMTP relay. For marketing it offers a visual email editor, automation workflows, segmentation, A/B testing, landing pages and analytics. Mailjet is delivered as SaaS and is not open source. The company was founded in France, starting in Nantes, and states that it is headquartered in Paris.

Mailjet is part of Sinch, the Swedish communications company headquartered in Stockholm, which acquired it through the 2021 purchase of Pathwire. The ultimate owner is therefore a Swedish, and hence EU, company. According to Mailjet, customer data is hosted in the European Union and its infrastructure is ISO 27001 certified. Sinch's privacy notice also mentions data centres in the United States, depending on where the customer deploys. When setting up your account, check which region has been selected.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Mailjet

Mailjet is headquartered in FR and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data. The ultimate owner is based in SE, also within Europe.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Mailjet scores best on data residency.

Mailjet is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Mailjet together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
