Epic is an electronic health record (EHR) system for hospitals and health systems. Clinicians work in the Hyperspace client on top of the Chronicles database, while patients use MyChart to view records, book appointments, message care teams and handle billing. Epic also offers AI features for charting, visit preparation and patient questions, plus the Cosmos data warehouse, which holds de-identified data from many organisations. It is proprietary software. Epic offers cloud hosting for customers that prefer not to run their own servers.
Epic Systems is privately held and headquartered in Verona, Wisconsin, with its founder, Judith Faulkner, as chief executive. It has offices in several European countries and installations in the UK, Denmark, Finland, Norway and Switzerland, some of which have drawn criticism. Neither the vendor's website nor independent sources state where hosted customer data is stored, so European hospitals should obtain hosting locations and data-processing terms in writing. As a US company, Epic remains subject to US law, whatever the server location.
