EPS: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

eps Online-Überweisung (eps stands for electronic payment standard) is an Austrian online payment method for webshops. At checkout the customer selects eps, chooses their bank from a central list, logs in to online banking and approves the transfer with a TAN or electronic signature. The merchant receives an immediate payment confirmation, and eps includes a real-time execution guarantee. In Austria the method is also used for e-government services. Merchants sign an agreement with their bank and connect their shop through an XML interface to the servers of the participating banks; a test system is available.

eps was developed by Austrian banks together with STUZZA, the Austrian payments cooperation body. Participating banks include Bank Austria, Bawag, Erste Bank und Sparkassen, Raiffeisen, Volksbank and Oberbank. The sources name no foreign parent company and no hosting location, and eps is not open source.

Why digital sovereignty matters with EPS

EPS is headquartered in AT and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so EPS scores best on data residency.

EPS is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs EPS together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
