EteSync: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

EteSync is a service for end-to-end encrypted synchronisation of contacts, calendars, tasks and notes. Apps are available for Android, iOS and the web, and a DAV bridge lets existing desktop programs and clients connect. According to its makers, the server cannot read the synchronised data. You can sign up for the hosted service or run the open-source server software yourself.

EteSync is offered by EteSync Ltd, a company based in Coventry in the United Kingdom. According to its imprint page, the hosted service's servers are in Germany (Hetzner) and Austria (EDIS). The server software is released under the GNU AGPL v3, so you can operate your own instance and keep the data on your own infrastructure. The iOS app was co-funded in 2019 through NLnet and the NGI0 PET Fund of the EU's Next Generation Internet programme. No explicit GDPR or data processing agreement was found on the site.

Why digital sovereignty matters with EteSync

EteSync is headquartered in GB, outside the EU. Contracts and data therefore also fall under non-European law. The GDPR applies through contractual terms, but in a conflict with local legislation you have less certainty than with a European vendor.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so EteSync scores best on data residency.

EteSync is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs EteSync together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
