Dovecot: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Dovecot is an open-source email server for IMAP, POP3 and LMTP, with a local delivery agent, optional Sieve filtering and support for the mbox, Maildir and its own dbox storage formats. The project, started in 2002 by Timo Sirainen, emphasises security, standards compliance and speed. The Community Edition is freely available under open-source licences, mainly MIT and LGPLv2.1. For large service providers there is Dovecot Pro, a commercial edition. Dovecot is installed and operated by the organisation itself.

Dovecot originates in Finland and is part of Open-Xchange, whose parent country is Germany; dovecot.org names Open-Xchange as copyright holder. Because the software is open source and runs on your own servers, your organisation decides in which region the mailboxes are located, for example in the EU. Dovecot is therefore a building block for an independent mail environment without reliance on a non-European cloud provider. Commercial support for Dovecot Pro is provided through Open-Xchange.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Dovecot

Dovecot is headquartered in FI and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data. The ultimate owner is based in DE, also within Europe.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Dovecot scores best on data residency.

Dovecot is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Dovecot together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
