Mailcow: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

mailcow: dockerized is a self-hosted mail server suite for organisations and individuals who want to run their own email. It combines established open-source components in separate Docker containers: Postfix for SMTP, Dovecot for IMAP and POP, Rspamd for spam filtering, optional ClamAV antivirus, and SOGo for webmail with calendar and contacts over CalDAV and CardDAV. A web interface manages domains, mailboxes, DKIM keys, quarantine and two-factor authentication. It is installed with Docker Compose on a server of your own.

The project is managed and maintained by The Infrastructure Company GmbH in Willich, Germany, with contributions from the community. mailcow itself is released under the GNU General Public License version 3, so the code can be inspected and no vendor-hosted service is required. Because you operate the server yourself, mail and user data stay on infrastructure of your choice, for example a data centre in the EU. Paid support is available through Servercow. Operations, updates and backups remain your own responsibility.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Mailcow
