Axigen: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Axigen is email server software for Linux and Windows. It provides SMTP, IMAP and POP3 services, webmail with calendars, tasks and notes and, in the Business and MSP editions, groupware, a personal organiser, antivirus, antispam and advanced security policies. There is a free edition for personal use alongside Business, MSP and ISP editions. The customer or a hosting provider installs Axigen on bare metal, virtual machines or in private or public clouds. It targets telcos, ISPs, hosting providers, businesses and public bodies.

Axigen has been developed since 2003 at GeCAD Technologies in Romania. Since 2012 the product has belonged to Axigen Messaging, which in 2014 was sold to an investor group associated with Modulo Consulting, a Romanian IT services company. The software is closed source. Because you install Axigen yourself or through a hosting provider, the location of the mailboxes depends on that infrastructure. This gives you control over data location, but sovereignty also depends on the infrastructure and provider you choose.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Axigen

Axigen is headquartered in RO and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Axigen runs on infrastructure you choose and control yourself. You decide where the data lives, including fully within the EU if you want — this is not a fixed hosting choice made by the vendor.

Axigen is closed source, but you run the software yourself on your own infrastructure. The encryption keys and the runtime therefore stay under your own control, though you cannot audit or modify the source code. Ask about export options and open standards to limit software-level lock-in.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Axigen together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
