CipherMail: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

CipherMail is an email encryption gateway that centrally and automatically encrypts and digitally signs email. It supports S/MIME, PGP, TLS and PDF encryption and works with any SMTP-based email service. Recipients who cannot use S/MIME or PGP receive messages through Webmail Messenger, a secure web portal. Integration guides exist for Office 365 and Google Workspace. The gateway runs on the organisation's own infrastructure.

CipherMail B.V. is based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and is privately owned. The software is open source: the encryption core module can be downloaded and inspected, and the source code of the Community Edition is published on GitLab.com. Alongside the free edition there is a commercial licence with support. Because you host the gateway yourself, your organisation decides where mail and keys are processed, for example within the EU, without placing keys with an external cloud provider.

Why digital sovereignty matters with CipherMail

CipherMail is headquartered in NL and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so CipherMail scores best on data residency.

CipherMail is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs CipherMail together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
