Firebird is a relational database with many ANSI SQL standard features, strong concurrency and support for stored procedures and triggers. According to the project, the software has been used in production systems since 1981 under various names. Firebird runs on Linux, Windows and several Unix platforms, and it is free to download, use and deploy, including in commercial products, with no registration or licence fees. The database is installed and operated by you; there is no vendor-hosted service.
The project is supported by the Firebird Foundation, a non-profit association under Czech law registered in Prague. The foundation raises money through dues, donations and sponsorship, grants funds for development and infrastructure, owns the Firebird trademark and protects the project's legal interests. Modifications to the source code must be released under the same IDPL licence. Because you host Firebird yourself, you decide where the data resides; there is no US parent company or cloud provider between you and your data.
