SAP ASE is a relational database server for transactional enterprise workloads. It is originally Sybase SQL Server, also known as Sybase ASE, which SAP acquired when its takeover of Sybase was completed in July 2010. Customers run it on their own servers, in their own data centres, or on infrastructure-as-a-service platforms such as Google Cloud, which publishes a planning guide for SAP ASE deployments. Customers bring their own SAP licence, so the product is a commercial database.
SAP SE is headquartered in Walldorf, Germany, and is a European company (SE). According to the available information it has no controlling shareholder, as its largest share is free float. Because customers operate the database themselves, the deployment location decides where the data is stored, which leaves the choice of hosting region with the customer. Organisations considering a managed SAP service should confirm with SAP that EU hosting is contractually guaranteed before relying on it.
