Meilisearch: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Meilisearch is a search engine with an API for websites and applications. It offers full-text, semantic and hybrid search, filtering, faceting and sorting, typo tolerance, vector storage for similarity queries and RAG, geosearch and search analytics, with search-as-you-type responses. Meilisearch is delivered as a managed service (Meilisearch Cloud) or as self-hosted software; the Community Edition is licensed under MIT and free to use, including commercially. The Enterprise Edition is covered by the Business Source License 1.1 and requires a commercial agreement for production use.

Meilisearch is developed by Meili SAS, a French company headquartered in Paris. Every Meilisearch Cloud project lives in a single region that you choose at creation. There are nine regions, including Paris and Frankfurt (EU), London, and locations in the US, Asia, Australia and Brazil. For Paris and Frankfurt, Meilisearch states that documents, indexes and backups stay in the EU. You can also run the Community Edition yourself with a European provider, on premises or in an air-gapped environment.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Meilisearch

Meilisearch is headquartered in FR and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Meilisearch hosts data in EU, US, OTHER. Exactly what stays within the EU — and what does not — is defined by the vendor's data processing agreement and sub-processor list, not by a setting you control yourself; check those documents for the precise scope, including backups, logs and support access.

Meilisearch is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Meilisearch together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
