Flux CD: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Flux is an open-source tool for continuous and progressive delivery on Kubernetes, following the GitOps approach. You describe the desired state of applications, configuration and monitoring in Git, and Flux keeps the cluster in line with it automatically, so changes go through pull requests and the Git history acts as an audit trail. Flux works with Git providers, S3-compatible buckets, OCI artifacts and container registries, supports Kustomize and Helm, and can run canary releases together with Flagger. It runs as a set of controllers inside your own Kubernetes cluster and pulls changes itself.

The project was started in 2016 at Weaveworks and is now a graduated project of the Cloud Native Computing Foundation, aiming to be a vendor-neutral home for GitOps. The code is on GitHub under the Apache-2.0 licence. Because Flux runs in your own cluster, you decide where that cluster is located and which data leaves it. It is not a product of a single vendor, and is run as an open community project.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Flux CD

Flux CD is headquartered in GB, outside the EU. Contracts and data therefore also fall under non-European law. The GDPR applies through contractual terms, but in a conflict with local legislation you have less certainty than with a European vendor.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Flux CD scores best on data residency.

Flux CD is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Flux CD together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
