CFEngine: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

CFEngine is a platform for infrastructure automation, configuration management and compliance. Administrators describe the desired state of their systems in policy, and agents repeatedly bring each system towards that state, which helps prevent configuration drift. The platform also covers patch management, infrastructure hardening and compliance reporting. CFEngine comes in two editions: a Community Edition under an open-source licence for Linux, with community support, and a commercial Enterprise Edition for Windows and Linux that adds inventory and compliance reports, APIs, a web interface, alerts and dashboards.

CFEngine is developed and maintained by Northern.tech AS, a Norwegian company with offices in Oslo and in Mountain View, California. Norway is an EEA and EFTA member rather than an EU member state. The core is released under the GNU General Public License version 3. Because the agents and servers run on your own infrastructure, you decide where configuration and inventory data is stored.

Why digital sovereignty matters with CFEngine

CFEngine is headquartered in NO, which falls under the GDPR through the European Economic Area. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so CFEngine scores best on data residency.

CFEngine is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs CFEngine together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
