Codefresh: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Codefresh is a software delivery platform built around containers and Kubernetes, with support for virtual-machine and data-centre applications as well. Its CI/CD side is based on pipelines whose steps run as Docker images, and it integrates with major Git and cloud providers. On the GitOps side, Codefresh packages Argo CD, Argo Rollouts, Argo Workflows and Argo Events into an enterprise-supported runtime. Codefresh CI remains available to existing customers, who log in through the Codefresh sign-in. According to Octopus Deploy, the Codefresh GitOps Cloud product can no longer be signed up for or trialled.

Octopus Deploy, a company based in Brisbane, Australia, acquired Codefresh in February 2024, and Codefresh is now developed and supported within the Octopus portfolio. The platform is proprietary, although the Argo projects it builds on are open source. The sources consulted do not state where the Codefresh service is hosted, so ask the vendor about data location and contract terms.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Codefresh

Codefresh is headquartered in IE and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data. The ultimate owner is based in AU. Foreign control undermines part of the certainty a European headquarters offers.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Codefresh scores best on data residency.

Codefresh is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Codefresh together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
