MariaDB Server is an open-source relational database with an SQL interface, originally created as an enhanced, largely compatible replacement for MySQL. The server includes GIS and JSON features, among others, and is installed and operated by the user on their own infrastructure. The code is licensed under GPLv2; the MariaDB Foundation, a non-profit funded by corporate and individual sponsors, aims to keep the server open and states that it remains free software independent of commercial entities.
The commercial company behind MariaDB, MariaDB plc, has been privately owned since 10 September 2024 by K1 Investment Management, an investment firm based in Manhattan Beach, California. According to the company, it is headquartered in Silicon Valley and Dublin. A US owner is a CLOUD Act signal for the company's commercial services. If you host the open-source server yourself, you decide where the data resides, and the licence ensures you are not tied to a single supplier. For a European organisation, self-hosting on its own or European infrastructure is therefore the starting point.
