Checkmk: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Checkmk is a monitoring and observability platform for hybrid IT. It discovers hosts and services automatically, collects data with or without agents, and provides alerting, SLA reporting, OpenTelemetry support, synthetic monitoring, multi-tenancy and air-gapped deployments. Checkmk is offered in four editions: a free Community edition, the commercial Pro and Ultimate editions, which you run on your own infrastructure, and Checkmk Cloud, a managed software-as-a-service version.

Checkmk is developed by Checkmk GmbH in Munich, Germany. The Community edition is mainly licensed under the GPLv2, while the commercial editions use a proprietary licence, a so-called open-core model. In February 2025 PSG Equity, a growth-equity firm headquartered in Boston in the United States, announced a strategic investment in Checkmk; the size of the stake was not published. The self-hosted editions run wherever you install them, which lets a European organisation keep monitoring data in its own environment. The sources consulted do not state where Checkmk Cloud is hosted.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Checkmk

Checkmk is headquartered in DE and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data. The ultimate owner is based in US. Foreign control undermines part of the certainty a European headquarters offers.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Checkmk scores best on data residency.

Checkmk is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Checkmk together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
