Gitea is a self-hostable DevOps platform written in Go. It combines Git hosting and code review with issue tracking, kanban boards, wikis, a package registry and built-in CI/CD (Gitea Actions, compatible with GitHub Actions). It runs on Linux, Windows, macOS and Kubernetes, among others. Gitea is available as a free self-managed open-source edition, as Gitea Enterprise for self-hosting with additional features and support, and as Gitea Cloud, a managed service in which the customer chooses the provider and region.
The open-source edition is licensed under the MIT licence. If you host Gitea yourself, you decide where the data resides and which jurisdiction applies. With Gitea Cloud, the data location depends on the provider and region chosen. The commercial services are offered by CommitGo, Inc.; the company structure, and the Forgejo fork that emerged after a commercial company was formed around the project, deserve attention in a supplier assessment. For a European organisation, self-hosting on its own or European infrastructure is the most straightforward route.
