Forgejo: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Forgejo is a self-hostable software forge: a platform for Git repositories, collaboration and project management, aimed at teams and organisations that want to keep their source code in an environment they control. It is designed to be lightweight, low-maintenance and modest in resource use, with a focus on security, scaling, federation and privacy. You download Forgejo and run it yourself, or you create an account on Codeberg or another public instance.

Forgejo is developed by a community under Codeberg e.V., a democratic non-profit association that, according to the project, is registered in Berlin, Germany. Its governance is independent of Codeberg and defined by the contributors themselves. Forgejo is free software: from version 9.0 it is licensed under GPL v3 or later, and before that under the MIT licence. It began as a fork of Gitea. Because you can host it yourself, you decide where the data resides and under which jurisdiction; the project is community-governed.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Forgejo

Forgejo is headquartered in DE and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Forgejo scores best on data residency.

Forgejo is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Forgejo together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
