Garden is a DevOps automation tool for developing and testing Kubernetes applications. It spins up production-like environments on demand for development, testing and CI, uses the same configuration across all stages of software delivery, and speeds up builds and tests through caching. Configuration lives in garden.yml files, and Garden runs as a standalone program. Kubernetes is the most widely used plugin, followed by Terraform and Pulumi. There is an open-source core and, alongside it, a commercial cloud service called Garden Cloud.
Garden was founded in 2018 and is based in Berlin. Since November 2024 the company has been owned by Incredibuild, an Israeli company. The Garden core is open source under the Mozilla Public License 2.0, so you can run the tool yourself in your own CI and Kubernetes clusters. For a European organisation the relevant point is then that the tool does not need to send data elsewhere; for Garden Cloud, the hosting location and the ownership structure of the parent company should be assessed separately.
