Tekton: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Tekton is an open-source framework for building CI/CD systems on Kubernetes. It runs as an extension of a cluster through custom resources such as Task, Pipeline, TaskRun and PipelineRun, which are managed like other Kubernetes objects; each Task runs in its own pod. Components include Pipelines, Triggers that start pipelines on events, the tkn command-line tool, a Dashboard, a Catalog and Hub of reusable tasks, an Operator, Chains for signing and provenance of build artefacts, and Pipelines-as-Code for GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket and Forgejo. You install and operate it on your own cluster.

Tekton is a community project rather than a company product. It was originally hosted by the Continuous Delivery Foundation and became an incubating project of the Cloud Native Computing Foundation in 2026, with contributors including Red Hat, Google and IBM. The code is released under the Apache 2.0 licence. Because no single vendor operates Tekton, your pipeline and build data resides wherever the Kubernetes clusters and registries you choose are located, and a European organisation can run it entirely on EU infrastructure.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Tekton

Tekton is headquartered in US and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Tekton scores best on data residency.

Tekton is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Tekton together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
