FOG Project: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

FOG is an open-source solution for cloning and imaging computers and managing their inventory. Using PXE boot, PartClone and a web interface, you can image Windows PCs up to Windows 11. The suite also includes memory and disk tests, disk wiping, antivirus scanning, task scheduling, inventory management, remote deployment of operating systems and installation of software packages. FOG is server software that you install on your own Linux server with an installation script.

FOG Project is a community project; no legal entity is named anywhere. Its core developers show locations in the United States on their public profiles. The source code is licensed under the GPLv3 and the documentation is published at docs.fogproject.org. Because you run FOG on your own infrastructure, images and inventory data stay inside your network; the developers do not offer a hosted service.

Why digital sovereignty matters with FOG Project

FOG Project is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

FOG Project hosts data outside the EU (US). Personal data therefore leaves the EU, which requires a transfer mechanism under the GDPR and pulls the data residency score down.

FOG Project is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs FOG Project together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
