FortiGate is Fortinet's next-generation firewall. It combines firewalling with intrusion prevention, antivirus, sandboxing, application control, URL and DNS filtering, secure SD-WAN and zero-trust network access, all running on the FortiOS operating system and accelerated by Fortinet's own security processors. It is available as hardware appliances for branch, campus and data centre use, as virtual appliances for private, public and telco clouds, and as FortiGate-as-a-Service. FortiManager provides central management, and security subscriptions are supplied through FortiGuard.
Fortinet is a publicly listed American company headquartered in Sunnyvale, California. Hardware and virtual FortiGate units run in the customer's own environment, so the organisation decides where traffic, configuration and logs are processed, including in EU data centres. FortiGuard subscription services and FortiGate-as-a-Service are provided by Fortinet and fall under its US jurisdiction, so US access rules such as the CLOUD Act can be relevant to those components.
