Stormshield Network Security: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Stormshield Network Security (SNS) is a range of firewalls for protecting corporate and industrial networks, supplied as hardware appliances and as virtual appliances. Functions include intrusion prevention and detection, application control, antivirus, URL filtering, vulnerability detection, antispam and antiphishing, and SD-WAN connectivity. The range covers UTM, next-generation, hardened and industrial firewalls, for both IT and OT networks.

Stormshield is a French company headquartered in Issy-les-Moulineaux and a wholly owned subsidiary of Airbus Defence and Space Cyber Programmes. The firewalls run on equipment that the customer operates, as a physical device or a virtual machine, so traffic is inspected within the customer's own environment. The SNS firmware is certified to Common Criteria EAL4+ by ANSSI in France and holds approved and qualified status with the CCN in Spain. The software is proprietary. For European organisations, particularly in public administration and critical infrastructure, European ownership and national certification are relevant when choosing a perimeter firewall.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Stormshield Network Security

Stormshield Network Security is headquartered in FR and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Stormshield Network Security runs on infrastructure you choose and control yourself. You decide where the data lives, including fully within the EU if you want — this is not a fixed hosting choice made by the vendor.

Stormshield Network Security is closed source, but you run the software yourself on your own infrastructure. The encryption keys and the runtime therefore stay under your own control, though you cannot audit or modify the source code. Ask about export options and open standards to limit software-level lock-in.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Stormshield Network Security together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
