GnuCash is open-source accounting software for personal finances and small businesses. It uses double-entry bookkeeping and is available for GNU/Linux, BSD, Solaris, Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows. Users keep accounts, transactions and reports with it, both for a household and for a small business. It is a desktop application that you install on your own computer; the latest release shown on the project site is version 5.17 of 27 September 2026.
According to the project site, GnuCash is developed, maintained, documented and translated entirely by volunteers. The project has no legal entity of its own; the copyright is held in the name of The GnuCash Project. The developers' GitHub organisation lists the United States as its location, while donation accounts also exist in Belgium. The software is free software under the GNU GPL. Because you run it yourself, your accounting data stays on your own system and is not sent to the developers.
