Abacus: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Abacus is an integrated business software suite covering finance and accounting, payroll and HR, sales and CRM, procurement, production planning, warehouse and service management. Add-on modules cover document processing, digital signatures and AI features. The software is developed by Abacus Research AG and sold as an integrated ERP system through the vendor and its partner network. The vendor lists industry solutions for construction, trade, real estate and public administration.

Abacus Research AG is based in Wittenbach in the canton of St. Gallen, Switzerland. A 2024 press report says its four main shareholders agreed to keep the majority of the shares for ten years; the vendor's site does not name them, and no foreign parent is shown. Switzerland is outside the EU but part of the EFTA area. The vendor's pages do not describe where its cloud services are hosted, so buyers should confirm data locations and sub-processors in the contract before deployment.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Abacus

Abacus is headquartered in Switzerland and falls under Swiss law, including the revised Swiss data protection act. Switzerland is not an EU member, but the European Commission recognises its level of data protection as adequate. Its Swiss headquarters does not by itself bring it under US legislation such as the CLOUD Act.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Abacus scores best on data residency.

Abacus is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Abacus together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
