Billit: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Billit is a web-based invoicing and e-invoicing platform built around the Peppol network. It serves freelancers, small businesses, SMEs, larger enterprises, public institutions and accountants. Users create and send invoices and quotes, digitise purchase invoices, and link bank accounts and accounting packages. Billit acts as a Peppol Access Point and supports other e-invoicing networks such as SDI, ANAF and KSeF; software providers can white-label the access point under their own brand.

Billit N.V. is headquartered in Ghent, Belgium. According to its compliance page, the production environment runs in TransIP and Amazon Web Services data centres in the Netherlands and Ireland, and Billit has no plans to store customer data outside the EU. Billit holds ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certification and is a certified Peppol Access Point. The software is proprietary, not open source. For a European organisation this means a Belgian vendor with EU hosting, partly on infrastructure of a US cloud provider.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Billit

Billit is headquartered in BE and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Billit scores best on data residency.

Billit is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Billit together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
