Google Firebase is a platform of backend services for building and running mobile and web apps, aimed at app developers and development teams. It includes Authentication, Cloud Firestore and Realtime Database, Cloud Storage, Cloud Functions and Hosting, plus services for running apps such as Cloud Messaging, Crashlytics, Remote Config and Performance Monitoring. SDKs are available for Apple platforms, Android, the web, Flutter, Unity and C++. Google delivers Firebase as a managed cloud service.
Google is a US company, so US legislation such as the CLOUD Act can apply to the data processed. For Cloud Firestore, developers choose a database location when they create it, for example the multi-region eur3 (Belgium and the Netherlands, with a witness replica in Finland) or a single region such as europe-west4 (Netherlands) or europe-west3 (Frankfurt). The location cannot be changed afterwards. Firebase is not open source. A European location determines where data is stored, not who the provider is.
