Google One: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Google One is Google's subscription service for extra storage and backup. The storage is shared across Google Drive, Gmail and Google Photos. According to Google, the Google One app automatically backs up photos, videos, contacts and more, so they can be restored after a device is lost or replaced. A plan can be shared with up to five other people. Google AI plans are also sold under the brand. It is a cloud service with apps for Android and iOS and a web version.

Google LLC is a US company based in Mountain View, California, so the service falls under US jurisdiction, including the CLOUD Act. Its privacy policy says Google operates data centres around the world and that data may be processed outside the user's country; for European consumers it names Google Ireland Limited among the affiliates providing services. Choosing a storage region is not documented for Google One. The service is proprietary.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Google One

Google One is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

Google One hosts data outside the EU (US, OTHER). Personal data therefore leaves the EU, which requires a transfer mechanism under the GDPR and pulls the data residency score down.

Google One is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Google One together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
