H5P is a free open-source technology for creating, sharing and reusing interactive HTML5 content, such as interactive videos, presentations, quizzes and games. Authors only need a web browser, and the content works on computers, phones and tablets. H5P runs as a plugin for WordPress, Moodle, Drupal and other publishing systems, which you operate yourself. There is also H5P.com, a paid SaaS service whose content can be embedded in any platform that supports iframes or LTI, including Canvas, Brightspace, Blackboard and Moodle.

H5P was developed by H5P Group AS, a company based in Tromsø, Norway. In July 2024 H5P Group was acquired by D2L of Canada, which states that the parts of H5P that are open source today will remain open source. The ultimate parent is therefore outside the EEA, a point to weigh in contracts and data processing. The software is released under the MIT licence, and whoever hosts the plugin themselves keeps the data on their own infrastructure. For H5P.com, the hosting location is not stated on the pages reviewed.
