Hygraph: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Hygraph, formerly GraphCMS, is a headless content management system built around GraphQL. It stores structured content and delivers it through a single API to websites, apps and other channels. With content federation, Hygraph unifies content from separate sources, such as legacy CMSs, PIM, DAM and SaaS tools, into one content API, which removes the need for custom middleware. The product is aimed at development teams and organisations that publish across several channels, and it is delivered as SaaS.

Hygraph is headquartered in Berlin, Germany, and was renamed from GraphCMS in 2022. When you create a project you choose a hosting region; according to Hygraph these include an EU region as well as regions in the US and Asia-Pacific, so choose a European region deliberately if data must stay in the EU. For federated sources, those sources determine where the data resides. The software is not open source and cannot be self-hosted.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Hygraph

Hygraph is headquartered in DE and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Hygraph hosts data in EU, US, OTHER. Exactly what stays within the EU — and what does not — is defined by the vendor's data processing agreement and sub-processor list, not by a setting you control yourself; check those documents for the precise scope, including backups, logs and support access.

Hygraph is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Hygraph together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
