IBM watsonx.data is an open, hybrid data platform in the lakehouse style. It connects data where it lives, in cloud, multicloud, SaaS, a customer-managed VPC or on-premises, and adds governance, lineage and access control for AI and analytics workloads. Several query and processing engines can be used side by side, built on open components such as Presto, Spark, OpenSearch and Cassandra and on open table formats such as Apache Iceberg, Hive and Delta Lake. The platform is delivered as SaaS, as self-managed software or as BYOC (bring your own cloud).
IBM is headquartered in Armonk, New York (US). According to IBM's documentation, watsonx.data is available in IBM Cloud Frankfurt and AWS Frankfurt, among others, as well as in London and in regions in the US, Canada, Asia and Australia. Choosing self-managed software or BYOC gives more control over location. Because IBM is a US company, the CLOUD Act may also apply to data in European regions. European organisations should obtain IBM's data processing agreement before use.
