iDEAL / Wero: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

iDEAL | Wero is an online payment method that lets consumers pay a web shop through their own bank's internet or mobile banking, without a separate registration. Businesses can use iDEAL Checkout, iDEAL QR, payment links and scheduled payments, through acquirers and payment service providers. It is used for purchases and also for energy bills, donations and municipal payments. Since January 2026 the service carries the co-brand iDEAL | Wero, and the iDEAL name is expected to be replaced by Wero by the end of 2027. It is a hosted payment scheme, not software that you run yourself.

The service is operated by Currence iDEAL B.V. in the Netherlands. Since October 2023 iDEAL has been owned by the European Payments Initiative (EPI), a partnership of European banks; EPI Company SE has its address in Brussels. There is no non-European parent company. iDEAL | Wero is not open source and has no self-hosting option. For a European organisation it is a bank-based payment method under European ownership.
