Invariant Labs: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Invariant Labs develops security tooling for AI agents. Its products include Explorer, which lets developers inspect and observe agent behaviour, Guardrails, a contextual security layer that enforces rules on agents, and MCP-Scan, which scans MCP servers for vulnerabilities. It is aimed at teams that build agent-based applications and need to audit and constrain what those agents do. The Guardrails code is published on GitHub under the Apache 2.0 licence.

Invariant Labs AG is based in Zurich, Switzerland, and started as a spin-off from ETH Zurich. In June 2025 it was acquired by Snyk, which describes itself as headquartered in Boston in the United States; the acquiring company is therefore a US parent. The vendor does not state where the hosted products run or describe a data processing agreement, so these points need confirmation with the vendor. Why digital sovereignty matters with Invariant Labs

Invariant Labs is headquartered in Switzerland and falls under Swiss law, including the revised Swiss data protection act. Switzerland is not an EU member, but the European Commission recognises its level of data protection as adequate. Its Swiss headquarters does not by itself bring it under US legislation such as the CLOUD Act. The ultimate owner is based in US. Foreign control undermines part of the certainty a European headquarters offers.

Invariant Labs hosts data in Switzerland only. Switzerland is not part of the EU or the EEA, so the GDPR does not apply there directly; the European Commission does recognise Swiss data protection as adequate, so personal data can go there without extra safeguards.
