Kroki: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Kroki is an open-source API that generates diagrams from text descriptions. It brings existing renderers such as PlantUML, Mermaid, GraphViz, D2 and Structurizr behind one interface, called through GET and POST requests. Developers and documentation teams use it to add diagrams to documentation or build pipelines automatically. Alongside the hosted service at kroki.io, Kroki can be installed on an organisation's own infrastructure.

Kroki is released under the MIT licence and is built and maintained by Yuzu tech, which the maintainer's website places in Villeurbanne, France. The hosted service uses infrastructure from Exoscale, and the website does not state where the service runs or where data is processed. Organisations that do not want to send diagram source code to an external service can run Kroki themselves. In that way it replaces closed, cloud-only diagram APIs with code the organisation can inspect and operate.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Kroki

Kroki is headquartered in FR and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Kroki scores best on data residency.

Kroki is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Kroki together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
