Kyma is an open-source set of Kubernetes-based modular building blocks for developing and running cloud-native applications. Its modules are built on established open-source components such as Istio, NATS and OpenTelemetry. Organisations can install Kyma in their own Kubernetes cluster, or use the managed version on SAP Business Technology Platform. It can therefore serve as an open alternative to the managed Kubernetes and application platforms offered by large US cloud providers.
The project is supported by SAP SE, headquartered in Walldorf, Germany, and the Kyma runtime of SAP BTP is based on it. The source code is licensed under the Apache License 2.0. An organisation can run the modules in its own cluster, keeping applications and data on infrastructure it controls. The hosting locations of the managed SAP BTP service are not stated on the project pages, so the choice between self-hosting and the managed service also determines where data is processed.
