lakeFS: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

lakeFS is version-control software for data lakes. It sits on top of S3-compatible object storage, such as Amazon S3, Azure, Google Cloud Storage, MinIO or local storage, and manages the provenance, lifecycle and governed access of data used in analytics and AI pipelines. It is developed by Treeverse Labs, an Israeli company, and customers install it themselves on AWS, Azure, Google Cloud or on-premises infrastructure.

According to its privacy policy, Treeverse Labs Ltd. is based in Israel. lakeFS is released under the Business Source License 1.1, which its licence text describes as not an open-source licence, so it is not open source. Because customers run the software on their own storage, they decide where most of their data resides. The privacy policy says personal information is stored on cloud servers whose main data centre is in the United States and may be accessed from Israel. A European organisation should therefore review the Israeli and US processing arrangements before use.

Why digital sovereignty matters with lakeFS

lakeFS is headquartered in IL, outside the EU. Contracts and data therefore also fall under non-European law. The GDPR applies through contractual terms, but in a conflict with local legislation you have less certainty than with a European vendor.

lakeFS hosts data outside the EU (US, OTHER). Personal data therefore leaves the EU, which requires a transfer mechanism under the GDPR and pulls the data residency score down.

lakeFS is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs lakeFS together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
