Lowdefy: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Lowdefy is an open-source framework for building web applications from declarative YAML configuration. Teams use it to create internal tools, admin panels, customer portals and dashboards. The framework includes dozens of UI components, authentication through Auth.js with role-based access control, a plugin ecosystem and connectors for MongoDB, PostgreSQL, MySQL, Google Sheets, REST APIs and Elasticsearch, among others.

Lowdefy is published under the Apache 2.0 licence and is built and maintained by Resonancy, a services company with offices in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Sydney and Vancouver. Applications run anywhere Node.js runs, so you decide in which region the software and the data are located, for example in a European cloud. Resonancy also offers paid managed hosting. The company is based outside the EU; when you self-host, however, data processing stays in your own environment. For a European organisation, sovereignty then depends mainly on the chosen hosting provider and the connected data sources.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Lowdefy

Lowdefy is headquartered in ZA, outside the EU. Contracts and data therefore also fall under non-European law. The GDPR applies through contractual terms, but in a conflict with local legislation you have less certainty than with a European vendor.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Lowdefy scores best on data residency.

Lowdefy is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Lowdefy together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
