Macrium Reflect: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Macrium Reflect is backup and disk-imaging software for Windows, developed by Paramount Software UK Ltd, trading as Macrium Software. The current generation, Reflect X, creates compressed disk images and file and folder backups. Schedules combine full, differential and incremental backups with retention rules, and encryption and compression are available as options. Disks can also be cloned. Bootable rescue media based on WinPE or WinRE restore a system when Windows no longer starts, and an image can be mounted to recover individual files. Reflect X is installed on Windows; according to the documentation, the backup destination is a local drive or a network share. The vendor sells the product directly and through OEM partners.

Macrium is a UK company with offices in the United Kingdom, the United States and Canada. The United Kingdom is outside the EU. Because the software runs on your own systems, backup data stays at the destination you choose. The product is not open source, although the vendor says it uses open backup file formats, so that customers are not tied to a single provider.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Macrium Reflect

Macrium Reflect is headquartered in GB, outside the EU. Contracts and data therefore also fall under non-European law. The GDPR applies through contractual terms, but in a conflict with local legislation you have less certainty than with a European vendor.

Macrium Reflect hosts data in EU, OTHER. Exactly what stays within the EU — and what does not — is defined by the vendor's data processing agreement and sub-processor list, not by a setting you control yourself; check those documents for the precise scope, including backups, logs and support access.

Macrium Reflect is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Macrium Reflect together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
