Mistral Code: sovereignty score and 5 European alternatives

Mistral Code is Mistral AI's coding assistant for software teams, with an assistant in VS Code and JetBrains. It combines Codestral for completion, Codestral Embed for code search, Devstral for agentic coding and Mistral Medium for chat. At launch it added role-based access control, audit logging, an admin console and approval workflows. Mistral now offers the product under the Vibe name, with extensions for VS Code, JetBrains and Zed.

Mistral AI has its registered office in Paris, France. According to Mistral, deployment is possible serverless, in the cloud, on reserved capacity, hybrid or fully isolated on your own GPUs, and the Vibe offering also mentions self-hosting or a VPC. That gives a European organisation control over where code and prompts are processed. Which processors and locations apply to the hosted variant is set out in Mistral's Trust Center and data processing addendum. According to Mistral, the Mistral Code extension is a fork of the open-source Continue project.
