MITK (Medical Imaging Interaction Toolkit) is an open-source C++ framework and a desktop application, the MITK Workbench, for medical image processing. The Workbench loads and overlays CT, MRI and PET data from DICOM sources and offers 2D, 3D and 4D visualisation, semi-automatic and interactive segmentation, and image registration. It can be extended with plugins, and the pip-installable mitk package allows it to be driven from Python. Installers are provided for Windows, macOS and Linux.
MITK is developed at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) in Heidelberg, a foundation under public law, and is released under a BSD licence. The software runs on local workstations and no cloud service from the maintainer is involved, so imaging data stays within the organisation's own infrastructure. Because the source code is publicly available on GitHub, a European organisation can review, adapt and maintain it independently, without depending on a foreign owner.
