MJML: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

MJML (Mailjet Markup Language) is an open-source markup language and framework for responsive email. With semantic tags and a standard component library, its engine generates HTML with nested tables and inline CSS, so developers do not have to write it by hand. MJML can be used through npm, the command line or Node.js, in editor plug-ins such as Visual Studio Code and in an online editor on mjml.io. It is an alternative to proprietary email template builders whose templates are locked to one provider.

MJML was created by developers at Mailjet and is released under the MIT licence; the website calls it "powered by Mailjet". Mailjet SAS is based in Paris, France, and by its own account is part of Sweden's Sinch AB. Because the compiler runs locally, templates and content stay under the user's control, and the MIT licence means templates are not tied to one sending platform. Actually sending the messages requires a separate email service, whose data residency and GDPR compliance must be assessed separately.

Why digital sovereignty matters with MJML

MJML is headquartered in FR and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data. The ultimate owner is based in SE, also within Europe.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so MJML scores best on data residency.

MJML is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs MJML together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
