MSPension: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

MSPension is administration software for pension funds and other providers of the second pillar of the Swiss pension system, developed by M&S Software Engineering AG of Bern. The application runs in the browser and covers all administration models. Standard processes are configurable and can be automated on request, and integrated accounting keeps the figures up to date. Through the e-business platform connect, the fund exchanges data with employers, insured persons, pensioners and brokers. M&S also offers the software as SaaS, under the name M&S SaaS.

M&S Software Engineering AG is based in Bern and has a second location in Schlieren. The company states that its shares are fully owned by partners and employees, and no foreign parent company is named. In the SaaS variant, MSPension runs in the Microsoft Azure Switzerland cloud, in two Swiss regions, with encryption using customer-specific keys. The infrastructure is therefore hosted in Switzerland but supplied by a US cloud provider. Switzerland is not an EU member state but is an EFTA country with a European adequacy decision for data protection.

Why digital sovereignty matters with MSPension

MSPension is headquartered in Switzerland and falls under Swiss law, including the revised Swiss data protection act. Switzerland is not an EU member, but the European Commission recognises its level of data protection as adequate. Its Swiss headquarters does not by itself bring it under US legislation such as the CLOUD Act.

MSPension runs on infrastructure you choose and control yourself. You decide where the data lives, including fully within the EU if you want — this is not a fixed hosting choice made by the vendor.

MSPension is closed source, but you run the software yourself on your own infrastructure. The encryption keys and the runtime therefore stay under your own control, though you cannot audit or modify the source code. Ask about export options and open standards to limit software-level lock-in.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs MSPension together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
