Multibanco: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Multibanco is the Portuguese payment network that connects ATMs, point-of-sale terminals, online checkout and smartphones. Consumers use it to withdraw cash, pay bills with Multibanco references, make transfers and top up credit. Shops accept card payments with the MB brand, and online merchants offer Multibanco, MB WAY and bank cards at checkout. The network is a centrally operated service provided through banks and its operator, not something that you install yourself.

The network is run by SIBS (Sociedade Interbancária de Serviços), which according to Wikipedia is controlled by the member banks. SIBS also operates MB WAY and processes transactions for networks including Visa, Mastercard, American Express and UnionPay. No non-European parent company is known. Multibanco is not open source and offers no self-hosting option. It is mainly relevant for organisations that sell to Portuguese consumers. The sources used do not state where data is hosted.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Multibanco

Multibanco is headquartered in PT and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Multibanco scores best on data residency.

Multibanco is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Multibanco together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
