MultiSafepay: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

MultiSafepay is a payment service provider for online and in-store sales. Its offering covers online payments with cards, wallets and local European payment methods, payment terminals connected to the same platform, an omnichannel platform, and payment infrastructure for platforms, including onboarding, fund flows and compliance. Add-on tools cover risk and fraud filtering, invoicing and subscriptions, and reporting via API and SFTP. Free plugins exist for Magento 2, Shopware 6 and WooCommerce, among others, alongside APIs and SDKs. The service is delivered as a hosted service.

MultiSafepay has been active since 1999 and is based in Amsterdam. In July 2024 Ant International, part of Ant Group, completed its acquisition through its merchant business Antom, and MultiSafepay is now a wholly owned subsidiary. The ultimate parent is therefore outside the EU, which is a jurisdictional point to weigh. MultiSafepay is not open source and offers no self-hosting option.

Why digital sovereignty matters with MultiSafepay

MultiSafepay is headquartered in NL and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data. The ultimate owner is based in CN. Foreign control undermines part of the certainty a European headquarters offers.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so MultiSafepay scores best on data residency.

MultiSafepay is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs MultiSafepay together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
