NethServer: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

NethServer is an open-source server platform for small offices and medium-sized businesses. NethServer 8 installs and manages applications through a web interface using a container orchestrator, and can run on one machine or across several nodes, including in hybrid-cloud setups. Its modules include an identity module for single sign-on based on Keycloak, SOGo groupware, WebTop, a web server and WordPress. User domains and accounts are managed centrally. The earlier versions 6 and 7 have reached end of life.

NethServer is free software; several components, including ns8-core, are released under the GPL-3.0. The project's GitHub organisation lists Italy as its location, and the documentation carries a Nethesis copyright notice. Because you install the platform yourself, you decide where your data resides, for example on your own hardware or with a European hosting provider. In return you are responsible for installation, updates and security of the platform.

Why digital sovereignty matters with NethServer

NethServer is headquartered in IT and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so NethServer scores best on data residency.

NethServer is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.
