NetScaler is an application delivery and security platform. Its core product, the application delivery controller (ADC), handles load balancing, traffic optimisation and path selection for applications. It also offers a web application firewall, bot protection, authentication with single sign-on and zero trust network access, plus traffic and security insights. It is delivered as hardware appliances, virtual machines (VPX), software on bare metal and containers. The vendor says they share one code base.
NetScaler was developed in 1997 and acquired by Citrix in 2005. Since Citrix was taken private in a merger with TIBCO in 2022, it has been a business unit of Cloud Software Group, a US company in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Because customers deploy it themselves, as an appliance or as software in their own data centre or cloud tenancy, traffic can be processed in a location of their choosing, including within the EU. The US ownership is the sovereignty-relevant factor: the vendor and its parent fall under US jurisdiction.
